The best possible family for any animal is its own forever home.
However, there are times when animals are separated from their families for reasons beyond their control. The Borderland Humane Society strives to put these orphans in foster care as soon as possible. The animals greatly benefit from individualized care.
Foster "parent" volunteers always have the support of the BHS. Not only are our foster parents encouraged to call the BHS with any problems or concerns, but also the foster coordinator will check in periodically to monitor the progress of animals in foster care.
What Foster Parents Do
For young ones without a parent, you will fill in for the natural parent with feedings for nourishment and snuggling for comfort. You will agree to bring them to the vet at scheduled times for their check-ups and vaccinations. It may be an older dog or cat that may have a special circumstance that needs time to resolve before the animal is ready for adoption. Then at times, there is an animal that needs to be "socialized"; this calls for a very patient compassionate animal lover.
Become a Foster Parent
For more information on the foster program for babies as well as for adult animals, please contact the Borderland Humane Society Foster Coordinator at 218.324.2313, email info@borderlandhumanesociety.org, or click the volunteer link on the BHS website to volunteer online. All foster families must fill out a volunteer application and go through foster training and agree to all foster policies. All medical care is provided by the Borderland Humane Society. |
Why Donate to the Borderland Humane Society?
Borderland Humane Society (BHS) is a non-profit, 501©3 tax exempt organization that serves to prevent inhumane and cruel treatment of animals, primarily those considered as pets. Established in 1973, BHS serves the city of International Falls, Minnesota and the greater Koochiching County.
One of our key tasks is managing pet overpopulation through spay and neuter programs. BHS promptly investigates all reports of animal neglect and cruelty and advocates for adherence to animal welfare laws. We provide a telephone answer line (staffed by on-call volunteers) for the public to leave messages regarding animal care or concerns.
Borderland Humane Society has an eight member Board of Directors and standing and temporary committees for various needs of the organization. We also have an active membership that meets monthly to discuss and vote on animal-related issues affecting the society and the community we serve.
Like most shelters, and Humane societies, a great deal of our funding is used to house and care for homeless, neglected and abused animals and spay/neuters. We operate from limited foster homes and limited space at our new Holding Facility (formally City Pound), and we have a wonderful, committed group of volunteers who take these otherwise homeless or unwanted pets into their care until placement can be made or a forever home can be found.
If you are interested in helping us care for the animals or want to know how you can be involved, simply call us today at 218/324/2313 and our on call volunteer will be glad to take you call.
