| Why Donate to the Borderland Humane Society?
Borderland Humane Society (BHS) is a non-profit, 501©3 tax exempt organization that serves to prevent inhumane and cruel treatment of animals, primarily those considered as pets. Established in 1973, BHS serves the city of International Falls, Minnesota and the greater Koochiching County. One of our key tasks is managing pet overpopulation through spay and neuter programs. BHS promptly investigates all reports of animal neglect and cruelty and advocates for adherence to animal welfare laws. We provide a telephone answer line (staffed by on-call volunteers) for the public to leave messages regarding animal care or concerns.
Borderland Humane Society has an eight member Board of Directors and standing and temporary committees for various needs of the organization. We also have an active membership that meets monthly to discuss and vote on animal-related issues affecting the society and the community we serve.
Like most shelters and humane societies, a great deal of our funding is used to house and care for homeless and surrendered pets that are in need of new homes. We operate without a shelter, remarkably, and all animals in our custody are carefully placed into foster care. We have a wonderful, committed group of volunteers who take these otherwise homeless or unwanted pets into their homes until they are adopted by a new family. All animals in our care are given routine veterinary exams, vaccinations, and are spayed or neutered before being placed in new homes.
So, what have we accomplished?
* In 2006, we took in 126 animals and found new homes for nearly 100 of them. In the first quarter of 2007, we’ve taken in 43 animals and adopted out 32.
We provided for 71 spay/neuters in 2006 and 42 in the first quarter of 2007. When you consider that each fertile cat can produce, on average, 3 litters of kitten per year, with each litter yielding 4-6 kittens, the numbers can compound quickly. An unsprayed female dog can produce 2 litters of 6-10 puppies each year. If their offspring are also allowed to mate and reproduce you can easily see how fast the numbers of dogs and cats can escalate. There simply are not enough homes for them all.
Borderland Humane Society has no paid staff – only dedicated, tremendous volunteers who give their time and talents. Without their help, and the generous donations of people who care, we could not accomplish our goals. Remember, all donations are tax deductible. Borderland Humane Society and the animals of our community depend on caring citizens to support us.
