Why We Foster, By Rachel Crawford

These puppies were the ones that my dad picked up off the side of the road in the dead of winter. We had to leave the next day on a trip so we had to find a place for the puppies but there was no where for them to go. We called the police dispatch office saying we had the puppies and asked who we had to call. The lady there was so relieved we had picked up the puppies because a logger had called them in and they didn't know who to send out to get them. This is the whole reason we started fostering. These poor puppies were so starved that they were bloated. All we had for them was cat food and they snarfed it right down and they drank two huge bowls of water before they were finally satisfied. They were so cold from being outside that I had to snuggle with them for a while. They were so cute and I couldn't understand how anyone could do something like this. This is why I love fostering puppies. I was so happy when I heard all of them had gotten good homes.

It is approaching a year now since we adopted Cecil.  Just a short note to let you know Cecil is doing very well.  For quite a while he was skittish and easily frightened.  But with lots of love and attention he is now quite at home. Thanks again for allowing us to add him to the family. Here is a picture of Cecil relaxing, but keeping an eye on squirrels.

We adopted Brody last spring from the BHS. The day of the adoption, I stopped at the grocery store to get litter, food, toys etc.  I picked up Brody on my way home he was exactly what I wanted, a beautiful gray kitten. I got home, brought in the “groceries” and exclaimed to my husband that “I must be losing at as I had bought “kitten” food for our old cat!”  I followed Hubby outside and exclaimed, “I hear a kitten mewing.”  He than saw the feisty “Brody” in the car!  Brody has melted his way into Hubby’s heart and is pretty much the boss of our Corgi, German Shorthair, and Siamese. He even eats his treats out of a baby’s antique high chair. - Mary, Brody's adoptive owner

Hi, This is Matches, he came from the Borderland Humane Society a few years ago. We fell in love with him instantly and haven't stopped! He fell in love here with us as well! He shares his home with us, our dogs and another feline companion. He bonded from the start (to all of us!). He and our other kitty are always together like true mates. He has found our 5 year old daughter to be his master, where ever she goes he is right beside her! They play all the time and he can't seem to get enough of her! Below are 4 pictures of our beloved Matches. The first picture was taken shortly after he came home to us as a kitten, the other 3 pictures are current pictures of him. He has the most personality I have ever seen! He is such a joy to our family! As you can see, his favorite places to be are in our 5 year old daughters dresser drawers especially napping on her clean clothes! He also likes to play with her things, including her play dress up dresses! We would truly be lost without him, especially our daughter and our other kitty!

At the end of August, we adopted two kittens (brothers) and gave them a loving home. They have settled so nicely into their new home in Florida and are extremely well cared for with lots of love and LOTS of toys.
Eddie is becoming his own self now. He has found his voice and has a beautiful big boy meow. Eddie is just as fun as he is sweet. A big snuggler that will crawl onto your lap if he feels the need to snuggle. He loves to chase the flashlight around and really enjoys chasing and pouncing on his brother.....
Koda is really a big sweetheart and a huge stinker! He has very neat markings on his coat. Eddie has a striped pattern, where as Koda's, just like him, is all over the place! And another thing that is funny about him, whenever he gets surprised, his tail poofs up really big!! It's very cute!
What was really neat about the Koda-Bear was the way we connected when I first held him... he looked up at me with those big brown eyes, still sleepy from just waking up and that was it. I knew he was my cat. I just somehow knew inside my heart that him and I were meant to be together. And Eddie won me over with his shyness. He was so timid and snuggly, I knew that he needed to be with my sister, who is pretty mellow and calm. They turned out to be a perfect pair. They are my little angels who have filled my life and my heart with so much joy!

Although we have rescued various animals from Borderland Humane Society over the last 30 years, never has one so quickly moved into hearts and our home! We live on 25 acres along the river in northern MN. Our eight-year-old son spotted Kodi's picture and stated, "Mom, that's my dog!" Three days later, we were bringing Kodiak home for a "weekend trial run". It was clear only an hour later that Kodi was home for keeps! He is the most well-mannered, gentle, and loving 65 lb dog that I have ever met. Whenever our son is at school, Kodi trots through the whole house looking for him. When he can't find him, he sits at the top of the staircase and whines. Kodi is a Siberian Husky and has an obvious "inner knowledge" with pulling a sled ~ last winter we were pulling our son around on his sled and Kodi kept trying to take the rope from me! Finally, I tied it to his harness and he began to pull! Our boy was ecstatic, as were we. My husband took an old pair of cross-country skis and built a dog sled atop. It works beautifully, easily gliding over the snow. Our son and Kodi have become an inseparable team ~ on and off the snow! I know that whomever gave him up must have had a difficult time doing so, but if you are reading this now, know that Kodi is happy with his new family and we are blessed to have him.

"We were blessed in June of 2006 to adopt Chance, an abused kitten from the Borderland Humane Society. He was very skittish at first, having had a rough time to start off his young life. But since he was adopted, Chance has become an outgoing kitty, with plenty of spunk and spirit (he's also a Daddy's boy!). Unfortunately, he had to have some surgery, one which involved taking out one of his two major front teeth. These teeth are crucial to holding in a cat's tongue. So now his tongue hangs out a bit, but we have no problem cleaning his chin of a little drool now and then. When the BHS held their Pet Adoption Day last summer, we felt compelled to adopt Chance's sister Sasha, and they were reunited. When they first met, they hissed at each other, but after just a couple of days...they were inseparable! Now they enjoy sleeping on our front porch, or watching the birds in our back yard. The Borderland Humane Society has provided us with a pair of loving and fun cats that have truly made our life much better!"

“In one night she has firmly become embedded in our hearts. Thank you so very much.”

“Trixie and our black lab are inseparable. They play tug of war, wrestle, and nap together. They wake up and start all over again. He just fell in love with Trixie that first night. She is so very intelligent and a quick study. The nice thing is she wants to learn, too. She is so pooped out by 9 p.m. at night that she starts to yawn and yawn then nests up on the sofa with one of us or one of the other dogs and *poof* she's out. She's feeling secure and really coming into her own. She is a small mountain goat! I will sit at the computer to type and she will actually jump straight off the floor and onto my shoulder and perch there! She really is everybody's little darling.”
